Success Without Fulfillment: The Ultimate Teacher
There’s a Tony Robbins quote that hit me like a lightning bolt: “Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.” It’s powerful because it’s one of those truths that’s easy to overlook when you're chasing what you think will bring you happiness. For a long time, I thought success would automatically mean fulfillment. I thought they were the same thing. But then life taught me a humbling lesson.
For as long as I can remember, I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. I poured myself into that dream—late nights sketching, early mornings at fabric markets, and countless sacrifices along the way. And eventually, I made it. I didn’t just achieve my dream; I smashed it. A collection I worked on wasn’t just featured in Vogue—it was worn by Naomi Campbell and A$AP Rocky. The pieces were iconic, the collection was a commercial success, and I should have been over the moon.
But I wasn’t.
I remember staring at the glossy pages of Vogue and then at my original sketches and feeling… empty. I had achieved everything I thought I wanted, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. The applause, the accolades, the financial success—they didn’t fill the void.
It took me a while to understand why.
Fulfillment isn’t just about the goals you achieve; it’s about how those goals connect to your purpose. My success in fashion was real, but I realized that my purpose wasn’t just about creating beautiful clothes. My deeper calling—the thing that lights me up from within—has always been about helping others shine. Whether through connection, growth, or helping someone step into their power, that’s where I find true joy.
When your success aligns with your purpose, it’s like stepping into a flow that fuels every part of your being. But when success exists in a vacuum, detached from purpose, it can feel like a hollow win.
After teaching my first "Reflect, Release, and Renew" workshop last January at Emma Lacey’s cycle shop 6ycle, in Allentown, PA, I felt more alive than ever. My energy was buzzing, and I honestly felt high on the experience—the kind of high that comes from doing something deeply aligned with your purpose. The energy in the room was palpable, and it lingered long after the workshop ended. When I arrived to pick up my then 6-month-old, Benny, from his Gigi (my mom), she couldn’t believe how lit up I was. Designing this experience and seeing it through to fruition left me inspired and deeply connected to my path.
This realization was the catalyst for me to pivot, to build a life that’s rooted in helping others connect with themselves and discover their unique light. It’s why I started the Vibe Check community launching January 5th, 2025 and it’s why I’m writing this now. Because we all fall into the trap of chasing success as we see it and we often feel like a failure when it doesn’t yield the feel good feeling when we accomplish said dream. So wherever you are in your journey, ask yourself: What truly fulfills me?
A Simple Exercise to Find Your Fulfillment
Grab a notebook and try this reflective exercise to connect with what truly fulfills you:
List 3 Peak Moments in Your Life: Think about times when you felt truly alive, proud, or joyful. Write down what happened, who was involved, and how you felt.
Identify the Common Thread: Look at these moments and ask yourself: What values or experiences made these moments so meaningful? Was it connection, creativity, contribution, or something else?
Name Your “Why”: Based on your reflections, write a sentence that captures your purpose. For example, “I feel most fulfilled when I’m helping others grow and find their light.”
Revisit your “why” often. Use it as a compass to evaluate your goals and ensure they align with what truly matters to you.
Remember, fulfillment isn’t something you stumble upon—it’s something you intentionally create by living in alignment with your purpose.
Thank you for letting me share this part of my journey with you. I hope it inspires you to explore your own path to fulfillment.
With love and purpose,
Lauren

Hello Lauren! I found you via Ana Calin. Substack is a lovely community, isn’t it? I LOVE your purpose. The name of your publication drew me, and this article is insane in so many wonderful ways. First, Tony Robbins’ quote is right on, so powerful, and something I believe we should all learn FIRST in school, before they start asking you to think about your college major in high school. Secondly, that you achieved what you did in fashion and then pivoted is strength. Third, the name of your group is ridiculously attractive.
I have a super small group called Wise Women, and we meet online weekly. I keep it small because I’m not trying to grow it. I thought I would, but it turns out they like their group the way it is, and also I’m in the process of pivoting as I recently moved into a new chapter in my life. My youngest child graduated and found a job he loves. So I can now focus on writing and travel. How insane is that??? My publication is called Decision Confidence, and I write about making decisions that are in line with your deepest values and desires. Which is what drew me to you. Look forward to reading the rest and connecting. Thanks for being here.
Wow congrats on your accomplishment and on having the courage to pivot. I like the group title: Vibe Check ❤️ I keep considering starting a group and then backing away. With two littles I have to be honest about how much extra time and energy I have. Spoiler: it’s not a lot 😂 Keep me posted about your group maybe I can just join it instead. I’ve decided to offer free yoga once a month because that feels authentic, aligned, and manageable. Also, not sure if you listen to the podcast We Can Do Hard Things, but they just played an episode that reminds me of your group and what I’ve been envisioning. It’s a recent one about goal setting. It’s soooo good. 😊
